Deer Skin Domed Chest Trunk 1780-1792 Possibly Later in Date

Deer Skin Domed Chest Trunk 1780-1792 Possibly Later in Date

In need of TLC

Light coloured hide covered pine box with hand made handles for carrying. Labels on the top of the trunk covering and overlapping previous destination or owners named labels. One detail Edinburgh is partially visible.

Inside the chest is papered with published works repeated under the lid as well as around the main body of the box: Oration of the Interment of the Rev. W. Vidler 427 (PASTORS OF BATTLE BAPTIST CHURCH 1780-1792 W. Vidler) – New Publications – 430 Poetry – Abiding in Christ; Hymn of John vi.) This item could well have belonged originally to the Rev. W. Vidler who is well documented in Battle near Hastings. All the lining is dotted throughout.

Dimensions: 20” Length 12” Width 8” Height

Condition: Rusty hinges are no longer attached from the lid to the base of the box. The well made good clasp at the front used to be lockable, now without the key, but still helps to close this very old item.

Very rare example of an early 18th Century deerskin travelling trunk with domed lid and decorative steel studded strapping. Still retaining some of the hide and carrying handles.
