This painting is of Charles Lambton, the son of J. G. Lambton, created Earl of Durham in 1823, and one only has to look at the painting to understant why its nickname of "The Red Boy" came about.

Sir Thomas Lawrence became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1791. Painter to George III in 1792 and a full Royal Academician in 1794. He took over the Presidency of the Academy in 1820.
